Treating hyperuricemia with the hairy-leafed apitong

A study published in the Chinese Journal of Natural Medicines has found that vaticaffinol, a resveratrol tetramer isolated from ethanol extracts of gurjum tree (Dipterocarpus alatus), is an effective natural medicine for hyperuricemia.

  • A team of researchers from Nanjing University in China examined the anti-hyperuricemic and anti-inflammatory effects and possible mechanisms of vaticaffinol in oxonate-induced hyperuricemic mice.
  • One hour after giving potassium oxonate to induce hyperuricemia in mice, the research team gave mice vaticaffinol once a day for seven days.
  • The treatment of vaticaffinol in hyperuricemic mice resulted in significant reductions in serum uric acid levels.
  • It also improved the kidney function of hyperuricemic mice.
  • In addition, the vaticaffinol treatment caused the reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Based on the findings of the study, the research team concluded that vaticaffinol, which is found in gurjum plant, can be used to prevent and treat hyperuricemia with kidney inflammation.
